BACK IN THE DAY: Anyone remember the legendary South Florida Rock station K-102?
In the early 80's there were two Rock stations in South Florida. The big station was the legendary 103 WSHE . Just up the road from WSHE in Ft. Lauderdale there was a smaller upstart Rock station called K-102. WCKO.
K-102 had about 1 one hundredth the budget of the gigantic WSHE, but often made up for it with creative, edgy programming. There was a good old fashioned 'radio war' between the stations which made for GREAT radio! Rock radio in South Florida at the time was absolutely outstanding.
I was in Broadcasting School at the time in Ft. Lauderdale and both stations were super popular. I dreamed of being on the air at K-102 or WSHE!
A few months out of school, I was hired at K-102 for Overnights (graveyard shift)!
A DJ at K-102! My home town hero rock station! Never in a million years would I have ever believed this!
Man, I was G-R-E-E-N but the Program Director liked my Audition tape from am-WSTU and hired me. K-102 was my first taste of big boy, major market Radio.
